Organize Canvas Content with Layers in Mycelo | Mycelo.app

Layers

Stack work into layers, control visibility, and move nodes between layers to stay focused.

Layers

Layers let you split a busy canvas into manageable stacks. Each layer controls which nodes are visible and which layer new items land on, so you can focus on one slice of work without disturbing everything else.

Opening the Layers panel

  • In the canvas toolbar, click the Layers (stack) icon to open the panel on the right.
  • The panel shows the list of layers, the active layer badge, and quick toggles for visibility.

Creating and naming layers

  1. Click Add layer (plus icon) in the Layers panel.
  2. Give the layer a clear name (e.g., “Wireframes”, “Annotations”, “Dev Notes”).
  3. The new layer becomes active immediately, so new nodes will be created on it until you switch layers.

Moving items between layers

  • Single node: Right-click a node, choose Move to Layer, then pick the target layer.
  • Multi-select: Select multiple nodes, right-click, and choose Move All to Layer to move everything at once.
  • Connections follow their nodes; moving a node moves its linked connections if both endpoints stay visible.

Visibility and focus

  • Use the eye icon beside a layer to toggle its visibility. Hidden layers remove their nodes (and dependent connections) from view and interaction.
  • Keep only the layer you’re working on visible to reduce visual noise, then re-enable others for review.

Reordering and defaults

  • Drag layers up or down to reorder them; the topmost visible layers render above lower ones.
  • Set your primary working layer as active before drawing so new shapes, stickies, or tasks land where you expect.

Removing layers safely

  • Delete a layer from its menu. If nodes exist on that layer, move them to another layer first to avoid losing track of them.
  • A simple habit: before deleting, select all nodes on the layer and move them to your destination layer with Move All to Layer.

Tips for layer organization

  • Separate base content (frames, diagrams) from annotations to present cleanly.
  • Use a dedicated feedback layer during reviews so you can hide comments later.
  • Keep imports or reference images on their own layer to toggle them on/off as needed.
  • Lock in a convention (e.g., top-to-bottom = workflow order) so teammates know where to place new work.
